RIP Omsin, the coin-eating turtle

Updated

Omsin, a green sea turtle, has died. She was 25 years old.

The turtle, whose name means "piggy bank" in Thai, became famous a few weeks ago when surgeons pulled 11 pounds of coins out of her stomach. The coins have been thrown into her home pond in Thailand over the years by people hoping for good luck, but it turns out that Omsin thought they were food and ate them. By the time anyone realized something was wrong, she had ingested more than 900 coins.

Doctors removed the coins in a seven-hour-long operation and things seemed fine. Then, last Sunday, Omsin went into a coma from which she would never wake up. According to the BBC, doctors believe that the coins had created extra space in Omsin's stomach. Once they were removed, that space blocked blood flow to her intestines. Omsin was operated on again to fix it, but the damage and cumulative effects of everything else Omsin had been through were just too much.

Omsin's doctor at Chulalongkorn University, Nantarika Chansue, posted some photos as well as video of Omsin's final moments, including what appears to be sea turtle CPR.

Sleep well, turtle.
