Recovering addicts read letter from their toddler every day to keep fighting

The Johnson family seems happy and comfortable on the outside, but what is hanging on their refrigerator reveals demons they have battled for years.

Megan and Ryan Johnson hold tightly to a letter written by a loved one posing as their 9-month-old baby, Lennon.

"Thank you mommy and daddy for choosing recovery and for giving others hope," the letter says.

Megan and Ryan are both recovering from addiction. Ryan began his drug use after watching his stepfather take pills for pain.

"I would not want to do it, not want to get high and the whole time I am (thinking)... I shouldn't be doing this, and I can't stop myself. My brain almost shuts off and suddenly I am high," Ryan told WGN.

After years of struggling to recover, Ryan has been clean for a year. He met his wife, Megan, in a program. They now, with the help of their baby, do their best to stay clean together.

"She can't keep me sober but she is definitely a good motivation for me to continue to do what I need to do for myself and for him as well," Megan told WGN.

Through every moment, Ryan and Megan are fighting addiction. Ryan said that without their recovery, their family does not exist.

To serve as a constant reminder of the value of staying sober, a relative wrote them a letter from Lennon's perspective, which hangs on the fridge to this day. It reads:

My Name Is Lennon,

This is my mommy Megan and daddy Ryan
My parents are miracles today because
they both decided to get clean from heroin
a long time ago and then I came along to
show the world that there is hope in
recovery and that miracles do come true!
Thank you mommy and daddy for choosing
recovery and giving others hope.
