Boaty McBoatface is on its first big mission

In March 2016, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) asked the world to name its new $300 million Antarctic survey vessel.

And boy, did the world deliver.

The public voted overwhelmingly to name the ship "Boaty McBoatface."

Sadly, the NERC did not think this was as funny as Twitter did, and they decided to name the vessel after veteran broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, according to Mashable.

But the name did not go down with the ship, and a different mini-submarine that has been dubbed "Boaty McBoatface" is now heading out on its first mission to the Antarctic.

It will investigate parts of the Southern Ocean.

Good luck, Boaty McBoatface! May your voyage be as charmed as your name.
