Trump says he deserves credit for stellar jobs report, experts disagree

President Trump has been touting the number of jobs he has created, but some experts have said his claims may not be entirely accurate.

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted a screenshot of a Fox Business news indicating that the ADP jobs report for February had estimated 190,000 new jobs but recorded an actual gain of 298,000 jobs.

Trump added the comment, "Great news. We are only just beginning. Together, we are going to [Make America Great Again]!"

However, a Politico report about the figures says, based on analysts' views, a higher-than expected jobs number will mostly "reflect a continuation of a trend that began under Obama when unemployment peaked at 10 percent in October 2009."

The media outlet also quotes Frances Donald, a senior economist with Manulife Asset Management, as saying about employment reports: "...they're lagging indicators so they tend to be a reflection of what has been happening in the economy in the prior six months to a year. The jobs numbers that we'll see six months from now will probably be a better reflection of the new administration."

Similarly, NBC News points out that many of the corporate investments Trump has reportedly publicized since taking office had been in the works for years, and executives with some of the companies, including Fiat Chrysler and General Motors have admitted this.

The Washington Post also notes that "hiring pledges aren't binding. Plans change, and the jobs don't always come to fruition."
