Zoo gorilla throws block of wood, hits pregnant woman

A woman in Harvey, Louisiana is recovering from an injury she sustained while visiting the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.

On Sunday, Sylvia Cressy, who is 6-months pregnant, was hit in the head with a block of wood thrown by one of the zoo's gorillas.

She told WWL, "When it hit me, I kind of blanked out. It really took the wind out of me and I fell on my belly. As I regained consciousness, I was just worried about my baby."

Cressy said she was treated at two different hospitals over a course of about 6 hours.

She asserts the zoo did nothing to help her. However, Chimene Grant, a spokesperson for the facility, has denied the allegation, saying personnel asked if she'd like them to call an ambulance, but neither Cressy nor those with her responded.

The zoo also clarified that the wooden block thrown from the gorilla enclosure is considered an enrichment item, notes WGNO.

Since the incident, they have refrained from placing that particular sort in the exhibit.
