A North Carolina teenager was charged with murder after he allegedly decapitated his mother on Monday afternoon, WTVD reports.

The Franklin County Sheriff's deputies came to a home around 12:45 p.m. after Oliver Mauricio Funes Machada, 18, called to report the crime.

When they arrived around noon, Funes Machada walked outside holding his mother's head in one hand and a knife in the other.

Sheriff Kent Winstead described the house as a "gruesome scene," according to WGHP.

Deputies found 35-year-old Yesenia Funes Beatriz Machado dead inside the home, along with two young girls who were unharmed. The fourth child was reportedly at school.

Funes Machada has since been charged with first-degree murder.

"We'll be here as long as it takes to do a thorough search," Terry Wright, a spokesperson for Franklin County Sheriff's Office, told ABC 11. "We owe it to the victims to make sure it's done in a proper manner — to make sure once it gets to the courthouse, justice can be served."
