Mom arrested after allegedly packing heroin in her 6-year-old son's backpack

Officials arrested a mother on Friday after finding heroin in her 6-year-old child's backpack.

Leah Pagano, 36, has readily admitted that she has a problem with the drug.

"I cannot believe I did this," she said after her arrest, according to court documents.

When Pagano's son got to school that morning, he took a white box out of his backpack and showed it to a teacher's aide named Grace Molina.

Court papers say the box contained heroin, glassine envelopes, pills and straws.

Someone called the police, and Pagano was summoned to the school where she was then arrested.

"I am the only one who prepares my son's school bag and lunch," Pagano told police, according to the papers. "I use heroin. I do not shoot it, but I snort it. I could not find my box with heroin inside.

She said she was not sure if it was in his school bag when she went to sleep.

Pagano was charged with misdemeanor drug possession, endangering the welfare of a child and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 years old, according to New York Daily News.

She was released without bail, and a representative at the lawyer's office would not speak to New York Daily News about the case.
