This past week started off with a bang at an Academy Awards that was more newsworthy than usual. Not only did Viola Davis become the first black actor to win the Triple Crown of Acting, but an unprecedented mixup caused the incorrect Best Picture winner to be announced at the end of the show.

In politics, President Trump spoke to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, during which he addressed the widow of fallen Navy SEAL William "Ryan" Owens. Vice President Mike Pence also held a meeting at the White House for leaders of historically black colleges and universities.

Elsewhere in the world, Italy's most active volcano spewed stunning but dangerous lava once again, many carnivals and celebrations were held in Brazil, and Snap Inc. posted record numbers at the stock exchange.
