Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid out for season with knee injury

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will miss the remainder of the season to recover from a left knee injury, the team announced Wednesday.

Embiid underwent an MRI exam on his knee on Monday and the results revealed the meniscus tear "appears more pronounced."

His status was changed by the 76ers from out indefinitely, while dealing with swelling and soreness in his left knee, to out for the remainder of this season.

The 22-year-old Embiid, the No. 3 overall pick in 2014, has not played in a game since Jan. 27.

"We will continue to work with leading specialists to gather additional information through clinical examination and sequential testing to determine the best course of action and next steps," said Dr. Jonathan Glashow, the Sixers' chief medical director.

The 7-foot, 250-pound Embiid missed the first two seasons of his career with foot injuries. The Cameroon native took the court this season and in 31 games averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 25.4 minutes per contest.

The 76ers (22-37) last week officially ruled out forward Ben Simmons, the 2016 No. 1 overall pick, for the remainder of his rookie season after tests revealed his broken right foot was not fully healed.
