Couple devastated after their baby is accidentally cremated

A Sydney couple is completely devastated after a hospital accidentally sent their newborn daughter to be cremated.

Anthony Meyers and Stella Pirko, whose child was stillborn, faced even more trauma after their daughter, Krystal Rose, was wrongly sent to a funeral for cremation before an autopsy had been done.

Pirko was induced at 28 weeks after scans showed her daughter had an enlarged bladder. The couple hoped further testing would provide answers as to why the child faced the condition.

Instead, Liverpool Hospital left the baby in the morgue for nine days before wrongly sending her away for cremation.

"I came home, I was suffering ... I was a mother without a baby and it was so hard," Pirkotold Nine News.

According to the news outlet, the couple's paperwork went missing, and a lack of funding in the hospital meant there were no full-time employees responsible for the hospital mortuary.

"We trusted them to do their jobs — to find out what happened to our baby. We cannot fathom how this happened," Pirko added.

The hospital told them it was an isolated case, and it is also looking to hire a full-time mortuary technician.
