Skiers and snowboarders light up the slopes

On Monday skiers and snowboarders in Russia came out to hit the slopes armed with flashlights, torches, and some angel costumes.

The group set out to paint the mountain with light: a photography technique where long exposure and continuous light sources come together to create a properly exposed image.

A long exposure is created by leaving the shutter of the camera open for an extended period of time. The shutter is the mechanism that allows light into the camera to create the final image, when an everyday photo is taken with your smartphone the shutter typically moves quite quickly. Faster or slower depending on the amount of light needed at the time. By using a long exposure the camera is able to capture the path of the moving objects instead of a quick snapshot in time. Due to how dark it was outside the people who were absolutely photographed appear as if they were never there.

One of the most interesting images was created by illuminated angel costumes. These heavenly snow angels descended the mountain carving back and forth coming to a final stop to spread their wings at the base of the run.
