WATCH LIVE: NASA announces new space discoveries beyond Earth's solar system

NASA is set to announce new discoveries on Wednesday related to "exoplanets," or planets outside Earth's own solar system.

While it is unlikely this announcement will include new alien findings, the Wednesday declaration will probably feature the latest updates around the planets that orbit stars other than our own.

Astronomers have confirmed 3,442 exoplanets in Earth's own Milky Way galaxy, but there could be 100 billion or more in addition to those previously discovered.

The press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.
