President Donald Trump's chief White House strategist Steve Bannon has emerged as one of the most powerful members of the president's inner circle -- but he hasn't earned a stellar reputation.

A new AOL News poll finds the majority of people surveyed said they held an unfavorable view of Bannon.

Of those polled, 61 percent said they currently view Bannon negatively while 28 percent of respondents view the former executive chairman of Breitbart favorably. Eleven percent said they weren't sure.

Bannon has described himself as an "economic nationalist" and been criticized by outsiders with allegations of anti-Semitism, which he vehemently denies.

Trump granted Bannon a seat on the powerful National Security Council in a recent executive order, but sources inside the White House subsequently leaked insider accounts suggesting that Trump did not fully understand the scope of duties he was handing to Bannon when he signed the order.

Trump has been highly critical of and denied many reports tied to leaks from within his administration

The allegations have led Trump critics to suggest that Bannon is functioning as a "shadow president" behind Trump. #StopPresidentBannon became a trending topic on Twitter over the weekend as some users voiced their concerns with the level of influence Bannon has on the president.

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and Bannon were rumored on Tuesday to have been feuding after a report from Bannon's former publication.

Trump responded to the Times report, tweeting that it was "total fiction." Both Bannon and Preibus have publicly denied any reported rift, presenting a united front.
