Trump and the GOP send out fake Abraham Lincoln quote

Donald Trump and the GOP are putting words in Abraham Lincoln's mouth.

Sunday was the former president's birthday and both Trump's Instagram and the GOP Twitter page celebrated by posting a meme quoting Lincoln as saying, "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."

Problem is, it seems Lincoln never actually said that.

The website Quote Investigator says the phrase is commonly attributed to him, but its earliest documented use was in a newspaper advertisement from 1947.

The misquote was posted the same day as a Department of Education tweet which misspelled the name of civil rights activist W. E. B. Du Bois.

The department apologized in a separate tweet with yet another typo.
