Report sheds light on Ivanka Trump's husband Jared Kushner's 'shadow secretary of state' role

President Trump has called his senior adviser, son-in-law Jared Kushner, "a tremendous asset...throughout the campaign and transition."

Based on reports, Kushner continues to play a key role in the new administration, in particular as an intermediary between Trump and foreign leaders.

A Washington Post piece provides insight into how in certain situations, Kushner has acted like a "shadow secretary of state, operating outside the boundaries of the State Department or National Security Council."

One instance cited is his role in the administration's activities pertaining to the U.S.-Mexico relations.

The media outlet notes that Kushner helped in drafting Trump's speech on Mexico and reportedly spent numerous hours trying to negotiate a meeting between his father-in-law and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

However, that meeting was abruptly canceled after heated words were exchanged between Trump and Nieto over who would pay for the wall.

Nonetheless, the Post says, "...(Kushner) has become the primary point of contact for presidents, ministers and ambassadors from more than two dozen countries, helping lay the groundwork for agreements."

Trump seems to have full confidence in Kushner and has indicated that his son-in-law could help broker peace in the Middle East, citing his family background, reports The Guardian.
