WATCH: President Trump announces his Supreme Court nominee

Updated

President Donald Trump will name his nominee to take Justice Antonin Scalia's seat on the Supreme Court on Tuesday night.

The seat has been vacant for nearly a year, as lawmakers in the Senate refused to confirm former President Barack Obama's pick, Merrick Garland, nominated in March.

Trump has vowed to fill the position with a conservative judge.

Vice President Mike Pence assured a group of pro-life activists on Friday that Trump's nominee will be similar to the man he or she will replace.

"President Donald Trump will announce a Supreme Court nominee who will uphold the God-given liberties enshrined in our Constitution in the tradition of the late and great Justice Antonin Scalia," Pence said.

Several names have since reportedly made the president's short list, including Judge Neil Gorsuch, who currently presides over the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. Fellow federal appeals court judges William Pryor and Thomas Hardiman have also been reported in Trump's top picks, according to NBC News. All three judges were appointed to their current positions by President George W. Bush.
