Infant starves to death after both parents fatally overdose on heroin at the same time

Pennsylvania authorities say a 5-month-old girl was left alone for as many as four days before she starved to death after her parents fatally overdosed on heroin, PEOPLE reports.

The body of young Summer Chambers was found Thursday in a bassinet in the bedroom of a home in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

According to PEOPLE, the remains of her 19-year-old mother, Chelsea Cardaro, were found in the bathroom and her 27-year-old father, Jason Chambers, was found on the first floor.

Cambria County District Attorney Kelly Callihan told PEOPLE that Summer's parents had been dead for a week by the time a friend found them.

Pathologists say the mother and father died at almost the same exact time.

"It's so sad and really illustrates just how bad the heroin epidemic is, not only here but across the country," Callihan told PEOPLE.

She added that if they did not die within minutes of each other, she believes one would have called 911 to save the other.

"The pathologists said a child can live a couple of days without food or milk. She was only 5 months old, so she was on her back ... she had no way to move from that bassinet," she told PEOPLE.

Callihan said it was a picture in her mind that she would rather forget.

Summer's grandparents did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
