Boy's adoptive dad gives him his last name for Christmas

Landon, an 11-year-old boy, received a Christmas present he's always wanted -- and it's not something you would expect to find under the tree.

Janelle Rice, Landon's biological mother, filmed the boy opening his gift and posted it to Facebook.

He got an adoption certificate from his mother's husband -- and a new last name.

Janelle told Mashable that Landon really wanted to be adopted by her husband, Daniel, and share his last name.

Janelle and Daniel have been married for 10 years.

"When he was about five-years-old we heard it first. Because he said he wanted to "marry daddy" the way I did, so he could have the same last name," she told Mashable.

Janelle said that he told his teachers at his fifth grade "graduation" that he wanted to go by the last name that his mother and her husband share.

"That's when we knew we had to begin," she added.

Daniel has been working on the process of adopting Landon for months without telling the boy.

Written on Landon's certificate is a quote by Friedrich Schiller, which says, "It's not flesh and blood, but the heart that makes us father and son."
