Hospital worker saves own money to buy 1,000 toys for sick kids

OAK LAWN, Ill. (WGN) -- A woman who sees sick children at her job nearly everyday is doing all she can to help them feel better at Christmastime.

Trinity Hospital Food Service Aide Jessie Tendayi continued her holiday generosity in 2016, and delivered toys to young hospital patients at Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn Tuesday.

Tendayi began the gift-giving in 2009 with 100 toys.

This year, she's delivering 10 times as many.

Tendayi saves money from her paycheck - and sometimes pick ups extra shifts - to fund her mission.

She says she spent $5,000 on 1,000 toys.
