Joe Biden walked backed away slowly from talk of a potential 2020 presidential bid during an appearance on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" Tuesday.

"I don't plan on running again, but to say you know what's going to happen in four years is just not rational," he told Stephen Colbert, adding the caveat that he isn't shutting the door on the possibility for good.

"I can't see the circumstance in which I'd run, but what I've learned a long, long time ago is to never say never."

Talk of a potential Biden challenge to Donald Trump in four years gained steam after the vice president seemingly jokingly told reporters on Monday, "I am going to run in 2020."

"I'm not committing not to run. I'm not committed to anything. I learned a long time ago, fate has a strange way of intervening," he said, once pressed.

When asked by Colbert if he regrets removing his name from contention for the 2016 primary, Biden said he didn't. "I know I made the right decision for my family," he said, referencing the death of his son Beau in May 2015. "I'm not sure I would have been able to put my whole heart in it."

"What I regret is the circumstance that made me not able to run," he added. "I don't regret the actual decision. It was the right decision for me to have made."

On "The Late Show," Biden reiterated that he was leaving the decision about 2020 up to fate, adding that his age won't be a factor.

"Hell, Donald Trump is going to be 74 and I'll be 77 and in better shape," he quipped.
