We hear all too often about reports of human remains found in unlikely locations.

Law enforcement officers are trained to handle this kind of delicate situation, but sometimes civilians stumble upon the gruesome finds.

The Dayton Beach News-Journal spoke to local officers about the potential situation, since it happened three times in just five days in the two counties nearby.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Troiano told them what to do if people happen to find human remains:

What to do if you find human remains

1. Do not touch anything

Do not tamper with the scene in any way, and do your best to keep others from touching anything as well.

2. Call 9-1-1

Do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 or local law enforcement.

3. Mark the location of the remains

Without touching any of the remains, mark the general location. The best way to do this is electronically -- use your phone GPS to note the exact coordinates.

4. Take photos if you can

If you can do so without touching anything, snap a picture to send to law enforcement. Any documentation you can make without tampering with the scene can help.

5. Do not try to investigate

Anything you touch will be contaminated, so it is best to leave any investigating to the professionals.
