Woman kills friend after mistaking him for an intruder

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (WPIX) — Police say a New Jersey woman shot and killed her friend thinking he was an intruder in what appears to be a tragic accident.

Mercer County Police arrived at the home at the intersection of Genesee Street and East Park Avenue in Hamilton Township, and found 50 year old Kelvin Watford lying at the bottom of the stairs with a gunshot wound to his chest.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the woman was on the phone with Watford -- who had told her he was returning from a trip and said he was not in the area. But Investigators believe that he was attempting to surprise his friend.

Authorities say as the woman stayed on the phone with Watford, but she retrieved her gun after she heard a dog barking, and noises outside of her house. When she opened the bedroom doors, she saw a shadow of a person and fired a single shot.

No charges have been filed so far, as the investigation continues.
