Couple leads police on high-speed chase with baby in the back seat

FORREST CITY, Ark. (WREG) -- WREG obtained Sheriff's Department dash cam video of the driver of a silver Ford Taurus refusing to stop for deputies. You see the car weaving through traffic on Interstate 40.

At one point deputies pulled alongside the driver and he swerved to get off the interstate, blew through a stop sign, and jumped right back on.

Deputies were going 125 miles per hour and still couldn't keep up with him.

"There's no way a person with any good judgment would do anything like this," said Eddie Adamson, St. Francis County Sheriff's Deputy.

Adamson and his partner were the first deputies who tried to pull over 25-year old James Brooks and his passenger, 23-year old Joanie Green.

He's specially trained to look for people trafficking drugs and decided to run the Ford's plates before learning they were expired.

State and local police joined the chase which got dangerously close to a school, so Deputy Adamson called the chase off.

"At some point Forest City Police located him and got into a second pursuit," said Adamson.

That's when Brooks slammed into four squad cars, totaling a sheriff's car, and his Ford burst into flames.

That's when Deputy Adamson first found out the couple weren't the only ones in the car.

"He endangered not only the people on the roadway but their own 4-month-old baby," said Adamson.

The baby girl was strapped in a car seat in the back. She got out unharmed.

The car burned and the only thing saved was a metal box filled with syringes, meth and spoons used to cook it.

"If we had any idea at the beginning the chase, or at any point that there was a small child we would had terminated the chase. It never would have happened," said Adamson.

The driver appeared before a judge where his bond was set at $100,000.

The woman that was with him is in the hospital. When she gets out she'll go to jail as well.

Their child is in state custody.
