Did thousands of people write-in Harambe on Election Day?

Since Election Day and Donald Trump's stunning victory, one particular rumor has circulated the Internet: Harambe the gorilla received thousands of write-in votes.

Harambe was a gorilla shot and killed in May after a toddler fell in his habitat. He then became the subject to many jokes on the Internet.

On Tuesday, he resurfaced again -- as an apparent presidential choice:

This was not only perpetuated on Twitter, but some websites reported it as well such as satirical website The Daily Snark. The site even added statistics to the claim stating, "By around 1:00am ET, the dead gorilla racked up more than 15,000 write-in votes for the presidency Tuesday on election night."

According to fact-checking site Snopes, though, there is no backing to this claim. Write-in votes are rarely counted, so there is no way of knowing how many people actually voted for the gorilla.

Furthermore, Vox noted, some states don't even allow for write-in votes or they just throw them out.
