7 states that Trump must win to become president

Updated

With less than a week until Election Day, Donald Trump has seen his chances of becoming president surge to levels not seen since late September -- but if he wants to become president, there are are a handful of key states that he must be able to win on Election Day.

October was a tumultuous month for the Republican nominee, and his national polling numbers dipped. Election prognosticators, including FiveThirtyEight.com, suggested Trump's chances of winning had dropped to as little as 10 percent during part of October.

But a series of recent campaign developments, including new FBI inquiries into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, have shifted the state of the race significantly. As of late Wednesday, Trump's chances of winning had surged to 30 percent compared to Clinton's 70 percent chance, according to the polling forecast.

While it is too early to know, polling suggests Trump has a significant chance of victory in at least a handful -- if not all -- of these "must-win" states. Ohio, with its 18 electoral votes, appears to be leaning toward Trump.

Iowa, another must-win for Trump, is also leaning in his direction with only a few days left in the race to go.

The five other key states that Trump needs to win are currently leaning in his rival's direction -- including New Hampshire and Colorado.

Florida, North Carolina and Nevada are leaning toward Clinton as well, but by relatively small margins.
