(WPIX) -- A would-be hero in upstate New York who allegedly broke into his neighbor's home trying to save a dog from a burning house fire -- was actually arrested.

Because there was no fire.

State troopers instead say 43-year-old Michael Orchard was under the influence of LSD mixed with cough medicine when they found him standing heroically holding his neighbor's dog outside in Saratoga County after crashing his BMW through a backyard fence and then smashing the neighbor's back door to get inside.

Those who live in the area told police that they heard Orchard banging on doors yelling about a fire.

The man was charged with second degree burglary and third degree criminal mischief and was jailed on $15,000 bail.

The dog was unharmed.
