Backyard sinkhole becomes a local attraction
MISSION, Kan. (WDAF) -- A sinkhole has turned a Mission neighborhood into a tourist attraction, but neighbors say it's actually a hazard that needs to be fixed.
It's hard to miss the giant hole in the ground.
"My wife said there's this hole in the backyard. And I was like, don't worry about it. I'm sure it's an animal digging or something and then I look out there and I'm like what?" said homeowner Brian Bruce.

The sinkhole showed up after a massive thunderstorms in late August that flooded areas of Kansas City. Bruce said rain pooled at the bottom of his backyard and caused the sinkhole to form.
There's an orange safety fence around this sinkhole. It's meant to keep people out but as you can see, it's pretty flimsy and there are also holes around the fence.
The city of Mission said it's in the process of addressing the problem, but there's no time frame of when the project will be completed. That worries Bruce who says this sinkhole is dangerous for the neighborhood.
"I care so much about my property I'm concerned, but greater than me, more important than me is the community. The community and all the young kids who walk around us, it's a problem. It's a hazard," he said.
Bruce said he hopes the sinkhole will be fixed before winter.
