JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. (WDAF) – A family is happy after an Independence, Mo., mother is finally back in police custody. Whitley Rachael Evenson is charged in the murder of her 6-week-old son. It's a story FOX 4 first told you about in September of 2015.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Evenson was arrested Friday in a store parking lot in Post Falls, Idaho. She was out on bond when she failed to appear in court over the summer.

"It's just a big weight off my shoulders," said Leo Walker, who was the baby's father. "I mean, she did this to me, I am just glad she is going to finally be getting what she deserves."

Walker said he thinks his ex-girlfriend was trying to get back at him for breaking up with her. He said the breakup happened four days before baby Derek's death.

"I think it was just out of anger because I broke up with her and she knew I wasn't coming back," he told FOX 4.

Investigators said the teen mom confessed to putting her hand over the baby's nose and mouth. They said originally she told police she found the baby unconscious in his bassinet.

Evenson is charged with second degree murder. She is in Idaho awaiting extradition back to Jackson County.
