DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- Makayla Compton's future was uncertain in 2011 when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the end of her seventh-grade year. Friday night she was crowned the homecoming queen at Central Davidson High School.

"I never thought she would be here today like this, 'cause you know it was a very aggressive tumor that she had and for us to be here at this five year window for her it's an accomplishment, I want her to remember things like this," Makayla's dad Brian Compton said.

The cancer has put Makayla in a wheelchair, although she can walk short distances with help, and affected her speech. The school nominated her for the homecoming court and she was shocked.

"First of all I didn't know I was getting nominated, I mean I was never into this stuff like all popular and all that. To know that I'm on the homecoming court is really nice to know that they are giving me a chance," Makayla said.

Friends, family and teachers were in tears as Makayla was crowned and handed a bouquet of roses. Makayla herself was speechless.
