Meet the Mangut

These furry creatures look like a dog and raccoon mixed together. They are actually not related to either, despite their similar looks.

They belong to the canid animal family which includes foxes and wolves. They have thick, long fur, which changes color with the season.Their curved dexterous claws are perfect for climbing trees.

Like raccoons, they sometimes wash their food in nearby streams. Raccoon dogs are native to the East Asian region, like Japan. Where they inhabit forests and ponds.

These animals are popular in ancient Asian folklore. Studio Ghibli even produced an animation called 'Pom Poko' which is film about raccoon dogs who try to save the forest they live in.

It was said that when you come across these animals it should bring you good luck and fortune.
