NASA-sponsored tech startup has created a 3D printer that prints pizza

Updated

Move over Star Trek -- new technological advancements are coming to the new frontier. A company out of Texas has created a 3D food printer for outer space.

NASA has teamed up with the startup, BeeHex, to build a 3D food printer as space missions gets longer and more intensive.

This gives the space agency an easier way to feed astronauts during long space missions, and this new printer has already started making everyone's favorite -- pizza.

Like other 3D printers, the printer creates the dough, sauce and cheese combination out of edible ink.

Long duration missions have the space agency worried about food supplies. Currently, the conditions onboard a spacecraft greatly limit the food astronauts can have. Pre-packaged food has to be engineered to last five years but loses its nutritional benefits as a result.

NASA is hoping a 3D printer would give astronauts the ability to engineer healthy food without time limitations.
