Man fatally run over at his birthday party trying to stop friend from driving drunk

On Saturday night, Jonathan Carlyle Merkley celebrated his birthday, inviting friends to join him for an evening at a San Diego Hotel, reports KSWB.

According to authorities, the group had been drinking that night.

When it came time for one of them to go home, Merkley reportedly tried to stop her from driving after she'd consumed alcohol, notes KTLA.

The police reports that he did so by lying in front of her car.

The woman drove off anyway, allegedly running over Merkley in the process then failing to stop and check on him.

According to the OC Weekly, the man was rushed to an area hospital, but, having sustained severe chest trauma, died within an hour of arriving.
