This teacher's new 'no homework' policy is going viral

Typically, homework assignments elicit nothing more than groans and eye rolls from stressed out students.

But second-grade teacher Brandy Young's new policy on after-school assignments has people around the internet cheering.

"Dear Parents," her memo began. "After much research this summer, I am trying something new."

"Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year," it continued. "Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance."

"I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success," the memo ended. "Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside and get your child to bed early."

The new policy, which was shared on Reddit on August 21, has received over 4,000 comments, many by enthusiastic users who wished their teachers could have pushed similar agendas when they were growing up.

"I have this vivid memory of being in kindergarten and the teacher passing out a homework assignment that was something like practicing writing a letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case inside dotted lines," shared one Redditor. "I just started doing it when it got put on my table in front of me, and then the teacher took it and gave me a new one and said "Class, can you guys tell him what kind of work this is supposed to be?" and then like half the class in unison goes "HOMEWORK!" So lame."

Some, however, disagreed with the policy based on their own experiences.

"I never would have learned calculus without homework," commented another. "I'm just sayin."

Whether you vehemently support this type of educational reform of disagree with it entirely, one thing is for sure: More family time and sleep never hurt anybody.
