Armies around the world are continually making strides against the Islamic State, forcing the group out of their strongholds located around Iraq and Syria -- but what is left behind once the extremists are gone?

A look into the abandoned buildings, which include schools and prisons, give a chilling glimpse at what may have gone on within their confines.

Handcuffs and blindfolds can be found hanging on walls, while various containers, explosives and mechanical devices litter the floors. Underground tunnels are also often found. Counterterrorism forces guard and inspect the strongholds in order to learn more about the Islamic State while keeping the surrounding areas safe.

In the photos above, take a look at what is left behind after cities and towns are taken back from ISIS' rule.
