Has Hillary Clinton earned Americans' mistrust? Tim Kaine offers his view

Throughout her campaign, Hillary Clinton has dealt with claims that she isn't trustworthy as a result of her use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state.

Her Democratic running mate, Tim Kaine, was asked by Savannah Guthrie in an exclusive interview on TODAY — alongside his wife Anne Holton — whether Clinton has earned that mistrust.

"Well, here's what I've heard her say,'' Kaine said. "I've heard her say, 'I made a mistake, and I've learned something from it. And I wouldn't do it again, and I apologize.'''

Guthrie noted that on at least four occasions over the past year, Clinton has made statements about her email that turned out to be false.

"Listen, if you asked somebody a question 150 times or 200 times, you're gonna be able to find that they don't use exactly the same word every time,'' he said. "And there's gonna be variations, and then people are gonna play on those."

As for the race against Republican nominee Donald Trump, Kaine believes there is no danger of overconfidence despite polls showing Clinton with a lead.

"I see no complacency on the team. I have been in a lot of races. This is the ninth ballot I'll be on, and I've won every race, but barely, usually. And the way I win is I say, 'Be an underdog till they call you the winner.'"

Kaine expects the race to eventually tighten up.

"This has been a season of surprises, and so there'll be twists and turns, and I think that's gonna happen,'' he said.
