Heroin hidden inside shipment labeled 'praying items'

10 pounds of heroin were found by Cincinnati customs agents inside two candles apart of a shipment labeled "praying items." Officials estimate the value of the heroin to be about $400,000.

According to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection the shipment came from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was headed to Ontario, Canada.

In June, a narcotics detector dog found the shipment that was labeled as "praying items." After x-raying the shipment, officers were alerted to large objects with anomalies.

Two red candles were found in the shipment, each containing bags of a brown powder. Tests of the substance have confirmed they contain heroin.

"This is a pretty significant seizure. We generally will get heroin seizures or other hard narcotics seizures several times a week, but this is a particularly large one," Cincinnati Port Director Richard Gillespie told WCPO.
