Police found two dogs covered in tar searching for a cool spot to take shelter after they were placed on a roof in sweltering temperatures.

Photos from the Associate Humane Popcorn Park Shelter of New Jersey show a pit bull and a yorkie in distress. Both dogs were standing on tar in 96-degree weather. The tar was boiling, bubbling and burning their feet.

The AHS received a call about the canines, and when police responded to the location, they found the home vacant.

Authorities said there were trays of chicken legs and rice on the roof, but not a drop of water was in sight.

Officials carefully brought the dogs to an emergency veterinary hospital, where they were found severely burned and in guarded condition.

A spokesperson from the animal shelter told local news that even with shade, the temperatures on the roof would still be extremely dangerous.

Fortunately, both dogs are expected to make a full recovery.
