Police are trying to use 3D printing to unlock a murder victim's phone

Police in Michigan are trying to use 3D printing to unlock a murder victim's phone. A report from Flash Forward creator Rose Eveleth, says that police approached professors at the University of Michigan to create the deceased man's finger through 3D printing.

According to the report, the victim's body was too decayed for a fingerprint to be applied, so the only other option was 3D printing.

The investigation is still ongoing, so details are limited but according to the report, the man was murdered and there may be clues to solve the mystery of his murder on his locked phone.

After the FBI–Apple encryption dispute following the San Bernardino shooting, the police in this case have bypassed asking the phone company to help unlock the phone.

The phone in question may or may not be an iPhone and it is also unclear whether the victim was murdered before or after the new iOS passcode rules, which require a passcode if it has not been entered in the past six days, were in place.
