Remorseful thief leaves behind money with an apology written on it
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WXIN) -– A remorseful thief tried to make up for the crime by paying for it.
Over the weekend, Leslie Miller had been watching and waiting for a package to be delivered to her Franklin Township home. As soon as Miller opened her mailbox, she knew someone else had been there first.
"I was disappointed to say the least. A little mad," said Miller.
Instead of a package, Miller found money and a message in her mailbox. There was a total of $25, and on the back of the $20, written in black marker it says 'Stole your pants, felt sorry about it.'
"I was just dumbfounded. Who does that? Who leaves money and a note behind? Who does that?" asked Miller.
It took less than a day for the thief to have a change of heart and while Miller appreciates the apology, she somewhat questions it.
"It's a great gesture and you felt bad about It but it doesn't make up for the fact that you stole out of a mailbox, stole somebody's property that's not yours," said Miller.
Miller says the package contained a pair of leggings, which are now sold out.
Photos of the note:
"I had been searching for weeks for this certain pair, this certain pattern. I was excited when I got the shipment notice and came back and no pants," she said.
Miller checked with her neighbors and to her knowledge no one else was hit.
"If you're remorseful about something just return what you stole not something to replace it," said Miller.
Clearly, the thief decided the wild, one-size-fits-all pair was just their style because they ended up keeping the leggings. Miller knows it may be a stretch but she hopes to catch the thief in the act.
"If you're going to wear them. Somebody is going to notice you're wearing them," said Miller.
If the thief really wanted to cover the cost of the time, he or she still owes $10. Miller says they can keep the change, but not her pants.
"Return them where you took them," said Miller.
Miller doesn't want to get police involved. She's asking the thief to bring back the pants. No questions asked.
