Family gets nearly $1 million for old doorstop at auction

If you ever needed motivation to sort through your old junk in your home, you may discover that it could be extremely valuable.

A blue and white vase a family from Birmingham, England used as a doorstop for decades went up for auction by Hansons.

Turns out it's an authentic piece made between 1735 and 1799 in China. The estimates for what it could fetch were pretty high with a range of just shy of $400,000 to pushing $660,000, but it beat that. It sold for more than $855,000 at the auction.

The clients who put it up said the vase was passed on to them by their great Aunt Florence who was an antiques dealer. Florrie, as she was affectionately known, acquired it during the 1920s.

The vase was thought to have been made as a decoration for the emperor of China for his summer palace.

And now the proceeds can be used for a summer cottage or at least an amazing summer vacation for one happy family!
