Mom uses social media to get her son to do chores

Like many other boys his age, Devon spends a lot of time on the internet -- specifically the website Imgur.

He lives with his mom Kerri, who told BuzzFeed News she only wanted their first name to be used, in Florida.

When Kerri would glance at her son's computer or phone screen, she could see he was laughing at something on the website.

"He would be like, 'Look at this thing' and would just show me different things he thought was funny," Kerri told BuzzFeed News.

She said she's had to resort to creative measures to connect with her 20-year-old son, a high schooler who has autism.

Last week, Kerri asked Devon several times throughout the day to take out the trash so she could mop.

He ignored her requests to read through Imgur or play video games.

"I said, 'What do I have to do? Post a picture on there to get the trash out?'" she told BuzzFeed News. "And he said, 'Oh yeah right, Mom.'"

So she did.

Kerri created an account on Imgur and posted a photo of the family's full trash can.

Kerri said she thought to herself, Challenge accepted.

"D, this is your mom. Please take out the trash!" she wrote.

When Devon saw the post, he couldn't believe that his mom had actually gone on the website.

He was even more surprised to see the post earn more than 13,500 points and 185,000 views from fans of Kerri's parenting tactics.

She received a lot of praise.

"I just try to get into his world, which is online," she told BuzzFeed News.

"This is his world and the way that things are now, everything is online. I just try to be a part of his world and get across to him. It doesn't always work. But apparently a meme works."
