Conservative writer and Iraq war veteran David French acknowledged the rumors that he may be contemplating an independent bid for the White House on Wednesday with a coy tweet.

"All the normal political rules apply. The conventional wisdom has been right. An underdog can't win. Right?" French said on Wednesday, stoking rumors further.

Bill Kristol, a political pundit and one of the leaders of the "Never Trump" movement, has been a vocal advocate for finding an independent candidate to run in the November presidential election.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that French was the figure in question.

French tweeted shortly after the news broke that he was "incredibly humbled by and grateful for the many expressions of support."

But despite promises from Kristol that his rumored candidate would be impressive, French is far from a household name.

"According to our sources we can now report that the man being eyed by Kristol is a Conservative lawyer, writer and Iraqi war veteran named David French. You've probably not heard of him. We hadn't either," Bloomberg Politics reporter Mark Halperin said on "With All Due Respect" on Tuesday after breaking the news.

French is a writer for the National Review and serves as a major in the U.S. Army Reserve. He also served in Iraq in 2007. He's a Harvard-trained lawyer and is a New York Times bestselling author. He lives in Tennessee with his wife and three children.

French is also a member of the "Never Trump" movement, who recently wrote "When I look at Trump, I see a catastrophe in the making."

French reportedly hasn't made up his mind about running yet, but he does appear to have a show of support from 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"I know David French to be an honorable, intelligent and patriotic person. I look forward to following what he has to say," Romney tweeted Tuesday.
