I discovered the power of thrifting when I was in high school. Not only could I find high-end, designer pieces at a fraction of the cost, but it also felt good knowing that I was helping to reduce my fashion carbon footprint.

In case you didn’t know, buying new clothes actually has a pretty big impact on climate change. In 2020, McKinsey’s research showed that the fashion industry was responsible for almost 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2018, about 4 percent of the global total. For context, that’s the same amount of emissions per year as the entire economies of France, Germany and the United Kingdom combined. Ridiculous!

Shopping pre-owned clothing from thrift stores helps to reduce fashion’s carbon footprint because no new clothes need to be produced. If you want to shop more sustainably (but still want to be chic), check out some of my favorite thrift, vintage and second-hand stores that you can shop online.

ThredUP is the world’s largest online thrift store where you can buy and sell high-quality second-hand clothes. Comb through a wide selection of everyday pieces from mall brands to designer and premium brands alike.

Etsy is an online marketplace that highlights individual makers, independent designers and creative entrepreneurs around the world. If you like vintage and one-of-a-kind pieces, Etsy is the place for you.

Vestiaire Collective

Vestiaire Collective encourages consumers to consider resale as a smart and sustainable approach to fashion. It has a carefully curated catalogue of designer items that are expertly checked once sold for quality and authenticity.

Urban Outfitters Vintage

Launched from Urban Outfitters, the Urban Outfitters Urban Renewal range is a “curated collection of original vintage items and vintage that has been carefully selected, re-designed and upcycled into modern silhouettes,” according to the site.

Rebag allows you to buy, sell and exchange the most coveted designer handbags and accessories. The brand boasts names like Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Patek Philippe and more.
