Just like your favorite white T-shirt, a great pair of denim is a classic staple to have in your wardrobe. Whether you prefer black, dark blue, a lighter wash or all three, you can never go wrong with a great fitting jeans that go with just about anything.

These $27 Levi Shaping Skinny Jeans are Amazon’s No.1 best-selling jeans, with more than 17,000 five-star reviews. Beloved for its “tummy-slimming” panel and super-stretch fabric, the jeans come in sizes 2 to 28. Shoppers even call the fit of these affordable jeans a “miracle.”

With those rave reviews, I had to try them out for myself — and decided to enlist two of my co-workers to test them with me in three different colors and sizes. Check out our reviews of Amazon’s best-selling jeans for our unfiltered thoughts.

On the fit: The fit is good, but there isn’t a front button or zipper. You have to pull them straight up, which could be annoying for some but wasn’t too bad for me. There is just enough elasticity and stretch in the fabric, so it isn’t too tight to slide straight up with ease. And the length was perfect for me! I’m super glad I went with the 31 inches.

On the fabrication: I like the fabric. It’s very thick, but not too heavy. They’re the perfect pair of jeans for the cooler months (I probably wouldn’t wear them in the summer — at least not this black pair). Because the fabric is on the thicker side, they do feel much more expensive and I wouldn’t have guessed they were an Amazon purchase. They’re also not stiff like most jeans are — you can move freely with the first wear and don’t have to worry about breaking them in. I do like the highly-reviewed waistband, although I wish the jeans were more high-waisted — but it could be because my legs are long.

Would you recommend: I would definitely recommend these to a friend or anyone looking for a comfortable pair of jeans that look chic and won’t break the bank.

On the fit: I also chose the immaculate-waterless colorway because I like my jeans either really dark blue or black without any yellow seams, and this color looks super sleek! They are definitely true-to-size. If you struggle with jeans always being too long on your legs, the 27-inch length works great for petites. The leg hits right at my ankle so that I can wear my favorite pair of black booties with them.

On the fabrication: I typically don’t like “jeggings,” but these feel more jean-like than leggings. At first, I didn’t like how they don’t have front pockets, but actually not having that extra fabric from the pockets makes my waistline look and feel smoother. There’s an extra layer of random fabric on the inside that is supposed to help slim, but I don’t think it makes much of a difference. The jeans themselves are naturally shaping due to the thick but stretchy material.

Would you recommend: I would recommend these to all of my friends — and I think my mom needs a pair of these, ASAP!

On the fit: As someone on the petite side who normally wears a size 25 in denim, I found the fit super comfortable. They aren’t too tight, which give you the option of sizing down if you fall between sizes. I definitely prefer a higher-rise silhouette, but I was still impressed by these jeans — especially for the price! In terms of the ankle length, the jeans aren’t as tapered as your typical skinny jeans. I opted for 27-inches, which was the shortest option available. That said, I would have went with an even shorter choice, if it existed. But tucking the ankle into my boots works perfectly!

On the fabrication: I went with the light blue wash called sun worshipper-waterless. The hue is perfect to transition throughout seasons. There is nothing more uncomfortable than stiff denim, and these were thankfully the opposite. Since these jeans don’t have a button or a zipper, there is no hardware digging into your stomach, which is a major plus. The jeans have major stretch, but they somehow don’t lose shape throughout the day. And you don’t have to worry about them slipping down!

Would you recommend: I totally understand why over 26,000 shoppers love these jeans — especially if you’re looking for a great pair of denim in a variety of colors on a budget. As this enthusiastic five-star reviewer put it, “shut up and buy these jeans.”
