For the past six months, I’ve been on a personal journey to find a set of 10-pound dumbbells. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge of interest in the at-home fitness industry and, in turn, lead dumbbells to sell out everywhere. But now, I’m happy to report I finally found where to buy dumbbells online.
Pre-pandemic, it was relatively easy to buy dumbbells online at Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods or even Target. But post-stay-at-home orders, stores quickly sold out of dumbbells — and never restocked. Retailers that did have stock often listed weights for astronomically high prices or only sold the adjustable type.
But this week, I finally found dumbbells in stock on Gaiam’s website.
Shop: Neoprene Hand Weights Set, 10 pounds, $39.96
Gaiam is a trust-worthy fitness brand that specializes in yoga and pilates. And right now, the brand has neoprene hand weights in stock in several sizes — including 3-pound, 5-pound, 8-pound, 10-pound, 12-pound and 15-pound weights — starting at $6.98 for one.
Shop: Neoprene Hand Weights Set, 5 pounds, $19.96
The retailer sells the weights individually, so you’ll need to buy two to make a set when you shop. For my 10-pound set, each dumbbell cost $19.98, making it $39.96 for the set, plus shipping. Admittedly, depending on the size of weights and where you live, shipping can cost a pretty penny. It cost me about $20 in shipping, but as a new Gaiam customer, I was able to use the code “WELCOME” to get 20 percent off my order. In total, my order cost me $55.
If you’re building out your home gym, Gaiam also sells a dumbbell rack and hand weight kit that includes a 3-pound, 5-pound and 8-pound set of weights for $69.98.

Strength training not only benefits you physically, but it can be great for your mental health, according to a study published in the JAMA Psychiatry Journal in 2018. Researchers conducted 33 randomized clinical trials with over 1,800 people and found that people with mild to moderate depression who strength trained two or more days a week saw a “significant” reduction in their symptoms compared to those who did not.
During quarantine, I found working out at home has helped me focus better on my work and has improved my mood, working as a stress reliever. But, of course, increasing my level of strength was also an amazing benefit. I consistently used a 3 and 5-pound weights I already had at home. But now, I’m ready to finally move up to my 10-pounders.
