A significant number of fashion retailers and brands have shifted their efforts to producing fabric face masks ever since the CDC recommended all Americans should wear “face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.” And with the devastating shortage of N95 medical masks, it’s critical that the public reserve what surgical masks remain for our frontline healthcare workers.
Although fabric face masks will not protect us from getting the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that they can help “slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.”
According to reports from the CDC, cloth face coverings should:
“Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face”
“Be secured with ties or ear loops”
“Include multiple layers of fabric”
“Allow for breathing without restriction”
“Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape”
