Searches for floral face masks surge 185% amid Kate Middleton’s outings

“The Kate-effect” has far from slowed down even in the midst of a global pandemic.

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out earlier this week for a few social-distancing engagements where she stayed safe in a ditsy floral fabric face covering by London-based designer, Amaia Arrieta. For her first appearance to meet and play bingo with residents at the Shire Hall Care Home, the duchess matched her face mask to a floral dress by Emilia Wickstead styled with Castañer Carina wedges.

The day prior, Middleton sported the same pink printed mask to volunteer at a baby bank in Northern England, where she wore a white Suzannah dress with Tabitha Simmons pumps.

“Following Kate Middleton’s appearance wearing a floral face mask on Tuesday, searches for the style surged 185 percent in less than 24hrs in the UK,” according to a report from the global fashion search platform, Lyst. The data also noted that the “Most commonly used search terms alongside face masks the following day were ‘floral,’ ‘liberty print’ as well as ‘ditsy print.'”

As the CDC continues to recommend that people wear “face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain,” more and more retailers are pivoting their factories to produce masks. Although fabric face masks may not prevent you from getting the virus, the CDC explains that it can help “slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.”
