It's proven that Black-owned beauty businesses don't get the same shelf space or visibility as many mainstream (white) beauty brands. When confronted with that fact, make no mistake: The businesses are out there, and they're just as good as household names.
When it comes to spending, many non-Black people may have recently started recognizing how little they buy Black. In support of Black-owned businesses, social media has named July 7 as Blackout Day 2020, a day when people vow to hold their spending for a day unless spending money at a Black-owned shop. And there are so many places to drop dollars on Blackout Day and beyond.
Some of the most inclusive beauty brands on the market (that you, too, can shop from) are in fact Black-owned. Brands like UOMA Beauty, led by LVMH-alumn Sharon Chuter, has a lengthy line of 51 foundation shades with six different shade families — including ranges like Fair Lady, White Pearl, Brown Sugar and Black Pearl. Actor-turned-business woman Taraji P. Henson even has a haircare line called TPH by Taraji for all hair types, from straight to coily. Brands like Oui The People is a Black woman-owned brand that delivers razors, body care and shaving products that take the pressure off meeting beauty standards. The Honey Pot is a plant-based feminine care brand "made for humans with vaginas." There's even Black-owned candle brand Sensual Candle Co., which was inspired by a bath ritual to help with anxiety.
The day-to-day beauty tools and products you use now probably aren't from Black-owned beauty businesses, but that doesn't mean you can't begin to add them to your shopping lists — regularly.
In light of protests and supporting Black lives, you can pay it forward by purchasing and supporting Black-owned businesses that can be incorporated into your everyday lives. Here are just some of the Black-owned brands we love.
