In between the dance videos and hilarious pranks, TikTok is a surprisingly great source for innovative recipes, whether it’s pancake cereal or now, carrot bacon.

Carrot bacon is simply carrots that taste like bacon. It’s a healthy, vegan alternative that went viral after actress and TikTok influencer Tabitha Brown posted her recipe for turning carrots into crunchy, smoky, and salty faux bacon.

It’s a great choice for snacking, not to mention, pretty easy to make. That’s probably why, according to data provided by Pinterest, it’s also the top trending vegetable recipe of the moment.

In Brown’s video, which now has over 17.2 million views on TikTok, she uses a vegetable peeler to first shave whole carrots into thin strips. “See how it looks real thin? Uh huh,” she says, showing her flat carrot ribbons.

You could also use a mandoline or a vegetable spiralizer to shave your carrots into thin ribbons, but like Brown says in regard to how much you want to make, “That’s your business.”

Next, she mixes liquid smoke, maple syrup, garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder and black pepper.

“Mix this all up. This is your concoction for the carrots that turns it into the bacon. Put the ‘bacon’ in there and make sure it gets thoroughly seasoned,” she says. “You can leave it in there for about two minutes or so.”

Once your carrots are coated in the mixture, Brown says to place them in an air fryer or oven, although she uses an air fryer. Either way, preheat your appliance to 380° F and bake for five minutes.

“Let’s check the crunch… Listen real good, yup!” Brown says, tasting her carrot bacon once it’s done.

In a second video, she also shares her tip for using carrot bacon in place of the real deal in a BLT wrap.

In The Know Style Editor Laura Galvan decided to give the recipe a try, and reported back positive results.

“After coming across Tabitha Brown’s ‘carrot bacon’ recipe on TikTok, I had to try it,” she said, “I am not a vegetarian, but it just looked so good, and it did not disappoint. It doesn’t taste exactly like bacon, but the liquid smoke helps for that savory kick. It’s definitely a fun recipe to try during quarantine.”
