Olivia Culpo’s stylist breaks down how to do an easy French braid
Celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan gave In The Know her easy french braiding technique. Marjan is a 10-year veteran in the industry and has worked with Hollywood’s finest, including Olivia Culpo, Kerry Washington and Dove Cameron.
French braids are a common hairstyle that seems super easy to do on someone else, but when it comes to doing it on yourself, it can feel confusing.
“Split your hair down the middle and clip one side away,” Marjan told In The Know. “Grab a piece of the front hairline and split it into three.”
This is when the braiding begins. Remember, the technique is not too different from a standard plait, it just requires incorporating strands from the side of the head.
“Cross the outside pieces underneath the middle. Then each time you cross the hair under, add a piece of hair from the side,” Marjan said.
To make the plait appear thicker, gently tug the hair at the sides of the braid to loosen the strands and create the appearance of more volume.
The French braid is a classic style to add to your repertoire. The first known instances of a three-strand plait are traced back to the artwork on the Tassili n’Ajjer mountain range in Algeria, from roughly 6,000 years ago.
The hairstyle appeared to catch on all over the globe in the following millennia. Greek art, Celtic warriors and courtly women of the Sung Dynasty all seem to have sported the braid. The hairstyle wasn’t dubbed the “French braid” until 1871 when a short story from Arthur’s Home Magazine used the term, according to PopSugar.
So the next time you decide to pop on Marjan’s easy tutorial, remember you’re tapping into a 6,000-year-old history!
